The number of Bangladeshi students studying in the United States has reached a record high, with over 17,000 currently enrolled in U.S. institutions.
“The United States is deeply committed to promoting international education and student exchange, recognizing their vital role in driving innovation, enhancing economic growth, improving diplomacy, and strengthening national security,” stated the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka on Monday.
According to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, this significant increase marks a 26 percent rise from the previous academic year, making Bangladesh the second highest in global growth. As a result, Bangladesh has jumped from the 13th to the 8th largest source of international students in the U.S. in just one year.
Over the past decade, the number of Bangladeshi students in the U.S. has surged by more than 250 percent, rising from 4,802 in the 2013-2014 academic year to an impressive 17,099 in 2023-2024.
The report, jointly released by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education, tracks the enrollment of international students at U.S. universities and in pre-academic intensive English programs.
Overall, international student enrollment in the U.S. reached a record 1,126,690 for the 2023-24 academic year, reflecting a 7 percent increase from the previous year. Graduate student enrollment also hit a record high at 502,291, up 8 percent, while those seeking post-graduation practical work experience saw a 22 percent increase.
Community colleges experienced significant growth as well, with enrollment rising 13 percent to 59,315, marking the fastest growth rate in over 25 years.
In 2023, international students contributed more than $50 billion to the U.S. economy and supported over 368,000 jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
